Leadership trends

The Fourth Industrial Revolution demanded that CEOs take responsibility for the massive transformation of their businesses and for the astonishing impact that this transformation will have on the wider society and all the stakeholders. Success requires CEOs to develop the right leadership capabilities, workforce skills, and corporate cultures to support digital transformation and become agile to face the many uncertainties. A revolution in skills and a transformation of organizations is highly needed to sustain one’s presence in the marketplace.

According to blessingwhite.com, those who take into account individual values and personal differences while creating an environment of shared responsibility create a place where individuals enjoy work more and become more productive. Hence, the leadership trends that support transformation in the market and the economy are the following:

  • Coach and be ready to be coached: employees rely on the support of their companies to take on business challenges. Empowering employees makes them more innovative and intrapreneurial in addition to increasing their sense of belonging to the company. Empowerment should be preceded by delegation of authority.

Coaching should be purposeful and focused to enhance productivity. Being ready to be coached is rooted in the concept of being a lifelong learner to keep pace with the new trends of one’s profession. Leaders who seek and are open to feedback will be better positioned to gain the commitment and enthusiasm of the employees they lead.

  • Realize it is a millennial and Generation Z world: millennials make up 50% of the workforce. According to the data obtained from the LinkedIn survey, the number one reason millennials change jobs is to advance their career, followed by compensation and the desire for more challenging work and roles that are a better fit for their skills and interests. Research shows that millennials want to be challenged and are willing to work hard. They are positive, creative, optimistic and forward-looking. At the same time, they come with some pretty strong ideas about work/life balance, company values, and career expectations.

They are also a generation for whom a remote work environment and wearable technology are the norm. Leaders have to adopt a collaborative mindset to get the commitment of millennials and Generation Z cohorts. This generation is personally driven to seek education and professional development to increase employment opportunities in a world economy hit by many crises.

  • Create and leverage on a diverse work environment: Inclusive leadership must become part of the DNA of an organization. This kind of leadership surpasses tolerance and acceptance of others’ differences; it is about creating an inclusive workplace where employees representing all dimensions of diversity can thrive. Catalyst’s research identifies four core skills of inclusive leaders known as “EACH Mindset”.

EACH stands for:

a. Empowerment

b. Accountability

c. Courage

d. Humility Organizations like Catalyst have been able to demonstrate that there is an increased return on equity for businesses with more women and minorities in their executive levels. In addition, the research also shows that the more included employees feel, the more innovative and productive they are.

  • Vertical development, ownership development, and collective development: Vertical development refers to the advancement in a person’s thinking capacities. The outcome of vertical stage development is the ability to think in more complex, systemic, strategic, and interdependent ways. This comes in contrary to horizontal development, which is the development of new skills, abilities, and behaviors.

Horizontal development is most useful when a problem is clearly defined and there are known techniques for solving it. Due to the uncertainties controlling the business environment, vertical development has gained more momentum.

Ownership development: People develop fastest when they feel responsible for their progress and are involved in decision making and planning regardless of their position in the hierarchical structure of the company.

Collective Leadership: According to Simmons & Weinrich “[g]aining everyone’s participation is essential to a team’s success. Without an individual’s participation, the unique skills, talents, experience, and knowledge he/she brings to the team will be wasted.”

Factors Contributing to Better Collective Leadership

  • Open flows of information
  • More flexible and flatter hierarchies
  • Distributed resources
  • Distributed decision-making
  • Less centralization and control

Distributed leadership:

Distributed leadership can be considered to include shared, democratic, dispersed, and other related forms of leadership. It is a leadership style where leaders can emerge and exercise the power of knowledge wherever they are in the organizational chart. There are three premises of distributed leadership:

  1. Leadership is an emergent property of a group or network of interacting individuals
  2. There is an openness to the boundaries of leadership
  3. Varieties of expertise are distributed across the different levels of the organizational chart. Leaders might emerge based on the need of their expertise and how such expertise might be of impact

With the change in the pace of work, the impact of ever-changing technology, shifting demographics, increased environmental ambiguity, complexity, and uncertainty, being a leader is more challenging than ever before. Good leaders understand these trends and equip themselves with the skills required to embrace them. Effective leaders are characterized by being visionaries, a trait that leads to seizing opportunities and developing products and services to satisfy needs and wants not attended to by competitors. Leaders contribute to the competitive advantage sought by their corporations.

The environment and context of leadership have changed, becoming more multifaceted, unstable, and unpredictable. Because of these changing trends, a leader’s skills are more demanding in the sense of having more complex, adaptive thinking abilities and being vertically developed. With the new form of economy and the advent of information technology, more individuals now have the chance to show and exercise their leadership abilities to reach higher positions in the organizational chart or start their entrepreneurial ventures.

    1. I can’t but agree in this article. Nowadays leaders definitely ought to be supportive, transformational, empathetic, and empowering to seek the best of their subordinates. In times of crises the collaboration and cooperation of most of their subordinates as they work on motivating them and on empowering them(i can’t agree more that authority delegation, preceding Empowerment, will definitely boost any organization’s staff morale). This helps in developing the sense of employee ownership and collectiveness. Thus the trends of business as the trends of leadership go hand in hands, as todays business need to be geared for success, yet not at the expense of employee well-being and motivation on the contrary I really believe and abide by this standard as expressed by”Each Mindset” that people need to be empowered to know that everyone will be held accountable and that they display courage(it doesn’ t mean the absence of fear) as well as displaying humility, I fully concur with the fact that these leaders need to cope with the millennial and Gen z staffs as their wants, needs and expectations are fare different from Gen x cohorts or from the boomers who will soon be fully retired. So the generational gap plays a major role in coping with the generational gaps and to know that the younger generations don’t necessarily like the directive or authoritarian types of the other traditional leadership styles.

The mingling between leadership styles could lead to a state of “mental dizziness” where one wants to beat the challenges but at the same time has to hold onto the opportunities of the aftermath. 4. Dear doctor Hasan, I couldn’t have agreed more with your article. Your article is a road map to every company and how it should be acting in order to be a leader in its filed. I have experienced and lived the process you have explained and I would like to shed some light on it by using your steps. In my past 16 years of working with local and international companies I was lucky to participate in the process of moving the BATCO Company from a family business into an international enterprise in the field of construction, waste management and water treatment. It was the first time to have a CEO and COO controlling the company and the decision making process. New organization chart was created with clear titles, job descriptions and authority delegation. That led to some changes in the staff positions in order to put the skills each had into best practice for the sake of the company. HR department assigned us some training programs and encouraged higher education. In time some mid management managers started to shine as fine leaders with good results that prepared them to promotions and higher positions, luckily I was one of them. That encouraged me to move to Sultanate of Oman and take control of all the administrative tasks in the main office there. Without the changes that were made in the company structure, we would have stayed low level employees working for some company owner with loaded with money without any advance or progress.

  5. As to be defined, leadership is the art of motivating a group of people, intrinsically and extrinsically, to act toward achieving a common objective. In a business aspect, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a systematic strategy to meet the company’s needs. Being a successful leader isn’t a piece of cake as it sounds to be, especially while living in a VUCA environment, where competitors are striving to overcome all the uncertainties, and achieve development at various aspects. Leadership requires a set of in-demand skills, such as having good communication skills, along with noticeable etiquette in speech and communication. It also mandates being an active listener, and having tremendous and genuine empathy. As much as being a leader requires being creative and innovative, as much as the leader has to encourage any innovation created by lower hierarchical colleagues. A strong leader has to have a clear vision, and a persistent mission as well. Nevertheless, a leader definitely has to be charismatic, with a contagious positive spirit. Systematically summed up in the above article, by a remarkable leader, called Hasan Youness!

  6. When running a business, one has to always remember that he is not only in this company, it is not about ” his way ” and how ” he’ll be comfortable”. It is not about ” I’m right and you’re wrong”. Or even worse ” you’ll do it my way”. Running a company should be about and for the company, and for every single worker in this company. It is well known that cooperative working, sharing ideas, taking into consideration what others want and how they feel safe, secure and comfortable is what makes a worker successful. Cause if a job is being forced on me and I don’t even find it accurate, I will not give my all and do my best, I’ll just ” get it done “. Therefore, a leader should not only think about himself and force his ways on the employees, instead, he should get to know them, how they think, respect them in each possible way, and he’ll be seeing them giving their best for this company.

To be effective, the CEO must have the leadership skills to pass these circumstances successfully. To have productive and motivated employees, leaders must take into account the values and personal differences when creating a fruitful environment. The leadership trends that support transformation in the market are as follows: the company should give the power to the employees to motivate and innovate them. Moreover, the company and specifically the leaders should follow up millennials since they are creative, optimistic and like challenges. With their strong ideas and forward looking, they know how to deal with the crisis. Also, Leadership must be the main part of the organization. As long as there is a strong leadership, employees are active with high performance which can overtake any circumstances that the company can face. Furthermore, the vertical development, this refers to the capacity of information that a person has. Unlike the horizontal development which refers to the new skills and abilities. Organizations use the horizontal development to solve problems after they are defined. On the other hand, the owner ship development refers when the employee feels the responsibility regardless of his position. This leads to develop easily and fast. Regarding the collective leadership, it is the individual participation and collaboration to gain new knowledge and skills. Distributive leadership is when the individual feel free to use the power of knowledge whenever he/she is in the organization.
Crisis makes everything complex. To be a leader now a day is more challenging than before since everything has changed; the people, environment and businesses. Good leaders know how to deal with this change and complexity through using the skills needed. Leaders must update their skills since there is always a change in our life. What if a rapid and unpredictable change happened? Leaders must vertically develop with strong ideas to be in a higher position.

This interesting article involves the factors that contribute to encourage, empower and assist leaders and employees to achieve accountability, creativity, accept challenges and diversity, and become optimistic as well. With respect to me, the most effective way to ensure better leadership is to diminish centralization and authority over the employees so that they will become involved in the decision-making process, open to feedback, and develop new skills and knowledge that facilitate their adaptation to the changes in the environmental and technological changes in the workplace.

Same thing is applied in work, if individual’s needs are not satisfied, employees will not put their best efforts in their work. A successful leadership aims to satisfy the rapidly changes in client’s needs as well as employee’s needs by always being an updated person that tracks market needs and individual needs. When employees feels comfortable and happy at their work, they will be more motivated, more interested, and will utilize their own creativity and abilities in developing their company more. As mentioned in this article, the leader then must always be a person who knows the importance of each employee inside his company and value it, despite the differences between each employee and the other. A leader must appreciate his employees work and keep them involved in everything related to the company, by sharing with them factual information, responsibilities and let them be a part in the decision making process: “One hand can’t clap alone”. Employees should feel safe and comfortable to share their own ideas, experiences and abilities in work, this gives them the sense of power which will increase their productivity by putting more effort in work, this can be done when their leader is willing to listen and understand them. Employees must feel their company as another home for them.

  15. Leadership is a process and not just a personal quality. It is a series of actions that produce something or that lead to a particular result. The leadership process is characterized by influence, not only the influence of the leader upon followers, as described by many authors, but the interactive influence between the leader and the followers. It has been shown that leadership is an evolving concept, but it could be satisfactorily defined as “the process of interactive influence that occurs when, in a given context, some people accept someone as their leader to achieve common goals”. This definition seems to fit properly to the modern concept of leadership that gives the leader, the followers, and the context a very important role in the leadership process. We must high light the link between leadership and management, the leadership is about leading people. The management is about managing tasks. It is the most common definition of the difference between the leadership and the management. The HR Management should be the HR Leadership in most cases. The HR Managers do manage tasks (or requests resulting from HR Policies), but they lead line managers. They lead managers to work with their employees regularly. The HR Managers act as the leaders for the group of managers in the business units.

I started my comment by this quotation to stress the importance of flexibility in leadership. Leadership is not a unified plan that you have to abide by all the times (what is applied today might not be applied tomorrow). It is the smooth roadmap that directs leaders to the best practices for human well being and companies’ capital aligning with VUCA environment. As the world is changing economically and politically, leaders have to be aware of their decisions, philosophies, and strategies towards marketplace and employees. The effective and successful leadership puts employees’ interest and development at the heart of the process. Consequently, this high prioritized mission requires certain skills that every leader is eligible to have. These skills ( flexibility, decision decentralization, attentive listening, equitable staff inclusion, innovation, creativity, rapid response to changes, and skillful communication) are translated as success flavors and species. Confirming Dr. Hasan’s highlighted piece of writing, it is highly essential to provide a conducive environment where everyone has the right to grow, evolve, and develop. Once having an effective leadership, employees would definitely gain their space to show their best regardless their poisitions. As a result, development and growth are not coming in vain. They have emerged because of the good positioning in leadership. In conclusion, it is worthy to mention that this article has clearly and effectively summed up the key trends of effective leadership.

The content of this article is very similar to the training course of Leadership Systems. An organization that specializes in leadership training. It is very interesting to see, while in theory it is correct, that very few managers and CEOs in Lebanon are evolving as leaders and realizing the need for new skills. This is why we might see organizations getting more and more diverse while still struggle with the same basic leadership and empowerment issues. Moreover, when that happens, and an organization is centralized with little to no revolution in the skills needed, decision making becomes slow, response to trends becomes low, employees motivation drops, and retention rate rises amongst other factors.
Leadership Systems, where I looked at some of their material, believes in coaching and being coached as well. The meaning of the word “Coach” comes from the German root word “kotsche” that evolved around the 1550s, which literally means transporting people from a place to another. In Jim Smith’s book, The Master Coach, he says that leadership skills is all about empowering people and “transporting” them from one place to another, a better place.

Whether running your own company, or leading teams in any office, the best leaders require having a set of leadership qualities that helps in connecting with employees or clients in a positive way. Regarding these qualities, good communication skills are crucial, in addition to integrity, good listening to employees, and empathy. A strong leader also is accountable for the team’s result, good or bad, and thus creating a sense of responsibility among the whole team. And in the workplace, good leaders clearly state what they want, connect with people in a way making them feel important in order to gain their respect, and ask for suggestions and input.

For a leader to develop second and third plans, employees must be taken into consideration as a first step, because the success of any organization relies on the successful efforts of employees. He is democratic, looking for new opportunities to engage the entire system in thought and action, and create a sense of belonging among employees. He transforms each workplace he works in, for a beehive, where everyone has his important role and is ready for any external challenges to react as a team. These characteristics are able to be studied, trained, and applied. But, in my opinion, what remains an innate factor of leadership is charisma.. Some people are born to be leaders, they have only to put themselves on the track.

  41. “Leadership is a combination of legitimacy, personality and management skills that make others want to follow someone’s direction.” — Pierre-André de Chalendar, CEO, Saint Gobain
This article highlights the characteristics of a leader in such a challenging environment and crisis. The environment and background of leadership have shifted, becoming more multifaceted, chaotic, and volatile. Hence, the talents of a leader are more challenging in the sense of possessing more complex, adaptive thinking skills and being vertically established because of evolving trends. In addition to that, leaders have to foster digital transformation and become agile in the face of the many uncertainties. Success requires CEOs to build the right leadership capabilities, workforce skills, and organizational cultures. A leader must respect the work of his staff by encouraging effective communication and keep them involved in everything relevant to the business by sharing factual facts, roles, and encouraging them to engage in the decision-making process.
Essentially, leaders will thrive by building a constructive and welcoming climate. Workplace, which takes advantage of a cohesive and consistent vision for confirmed targets
Great effort Dr. Hassan keep it forward.

  42. It was an enjoyable and informative reading. In this article, I found a clear approach and a simplified guide that enables companies to perform at a level of professionalism and leadership.
Certainly, the leader cannot lead people by pushing them from behind, but he must walk in front of them. It is important for leaders to have many skills such as objectivity, time management, listening to others, avoiding pride and arrogance, companionship with employees, wise leadership of meetings. Moreover, they should develop their skills and the skills of their employees and create a way to deal with the generation gap in companies and follow the creative millennial generation with their strong ideas that they carry because they love the challenge and look to the future.

  44. The article presents a practical example of how leaders can put their mindsets towards inspiring workers and collaborating with them to succeed together. It could easily relate to the quote that says “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”. With the skills revolution that we are witnessing today, it becomes essential for leaders to coach, produce, challenge, collaborate, and progress. With the vertical and the horizontal development of employees, it has become urgent for leaders today to be flexible to encounter all the challenges and change them into blessings. With the “HOW” the article offers, I think it serves the best example of what leaders should have and do to reach success and thus make a difference.

  45. In the article “Leadership trends”, the author presents the main trends good leaders must understand in order to have an effective working environment. The first necessary point to obtain effective leadership is to have a coach who is ready to be coached. In other words, a flexible leader who takes into consideration the employees’ feedback and who’s is ready to be coached. In fact, this is an important trait in a successful leader, as it empowers the employees and increases their self-confidence, which in return enhances their feeling of belonging to the place, and thus improves their productivity. The second important trend is taking into account the importance of millennials who constitute about 50% of the workforce. In fact, employees at such age, who are usually recently graduated, are known to be highly motivated, creative, and powerful. Thus, supporting such workers would be highly valuable for the economy. Another leadership trend is creating a diverse work environment. This highly contributes to developing economy by taking advantage of different society members and thus diverse skills which increases productivity. Furthermore, to have effective leadership it is necessary to improve vertical, ownership, and collective development. Vertical development consists of developing complex, systemic, and strategic thinking, which is an essential trait that a successful leader must-have. Unlike horizontal development, which seems to be necessary for employees, vertical development is highly recommended for leaders who are known to be the brains controlling the economical process. Moreover, ownership development is highly important as it increases one’s belonging, responsibility, and involvement at work. Finally, collective development is necessary to decrease centralization and control, by allowing the participation of all staff members. It also allows distributed decision making and thus taking the advantage of diversity and different skills at work. Last but not least, an important leadership trend is having a distributed leadership. This allows exchanging skills, abilities, and knowledge between different leaders which leads to more interaction between individuals, and hence more productivity at work.

  48. Such an amazing and well-written article which provides a keen insight into Leadership Trends!
The hardest question for CEOs for them to answer is what is leadership? Who is a leader? According to many interviews done by hundreds of CEOs, they all define leadership in a different way. Hence, some of them are leading very successfully, and some aren’t.
Leadership is everywhere as we experience leadership in many times of our days. It is by having some core skills like being able to create a vision, execute on strategic direction, and most importantly is that we need new sets of skills and mind-sets. We really need a new type of a leader who can take and guide us forward; a new leader for 2030 that is different from today. Why and how? Most CEOs admit that we need a new set of skills since everything is changing (technology, automation, pace of change, purpose, artificial intelligence, meaning and impact, authentic leadership, transparency…) all these things are changing and because these things are changing, we need a new type of a leader.
