However, while I do believe many leaders are naturally born into leadership, I do think leadership is a trait that can be acquired overtime. One may think that all leaders are managers, but one must understand that management and leadership are not synonymous. Managers are great for keeping your people in check, but leaders influence your people by giving them a sense of belonging through, as the article points out, delegation of authority, diversity and inclusion, and most importantly, taking on a role of a soccer team’s coach (leader), and running alongside your team (employees) rather than just watching and waiting for them to score. Indeed, businesses or employees who work in a fast pace industry or environment and yet refuse to change usually get left behind. Ideally, it is important that companies adapt a philosophy to build a strong adaptable work force by professionally developing leaders among leaders in a multi-culturally diverse work environment that share both accountability and responsibility among other things. At some point millennials would retire or move on to something different or new, and if the work force left behind were not mentored and professionally developed as part of a succession plan or framework within the organization then the company is probably destined for disaster.
